By: Delaila Irma T. Calindas, Project Technical Staff II
In a dynamic celebration of National Fire Prevention Month and National Women’s Month, the Commission on Higher Education – Cordillera Administrative Region (CHED-CAR), through its UniFAST Unit, launched the first session of its Skills Enhancement and Employee Development (SEED) Project FY 2026, equipping personnel with essential fire safety awareness and practical skills on March 12, 2026.
Before the program began, personnel participated in an earthquake drill as part of the First Quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED), reinforcing their readiness and safety awareness. The NSED is a nationwide quarterly initiative that promotes disaster preparedness, establishes standard safety protocols, and ensures personnel are trained to respond effectively during earthquakes and other emergencies.
The program formally commenced with an opening and overview delivered by Dr. Christopher A. Depnag, Education Supervisor II and Head of the SIKAP/HUSAY Unit, who also serves as Safety Officer.
The training session was conducted by Mr. Eashraczar P. Iglesia, Fire Officer I of the Bureau of Fire Protection – La Trinidad. He began with an introduction to fire service, highlighting the Bureau’s vital role in public safety, before explaining the different classes of fire and their characteristics. The session also included fire extinguisher familiarization, covering the types of extinguishers, their proper use, and routine maintenance.
Participants then observed a hands-on fire response demonstration using the TPASS method, allowing them to apply practical fire safety techniques. A significant number of women personnel actively participated, highlighting their important role in promoting workplace safety and disaster preparedness.
During the open forum, attendees expressed appreciation for the practical and timely nature of the training, emphasizing how it enhances both professional skills and personal safety.
The session concluded with a message of thanks and appreciation from Ma. Geraldine F. Casipit, Chief Education Program Specialist, who underscored the importance of continuous learning and the empowerment of all personnel.
The SEED Project, a quarterly learning and development initiative spearheaded by the UniFAST Unit, reinforces CHED-CAR’s commitment to enhancing the skills and knowledge of its personnel, while promoting excellence in client service through the provision of targeted learning and development programs.
