By: Delaila Irma T. Calindas, Project Technical Staff II

As part of its annual monitoring efforts, CHED-UniFAST CAR visited the Project SAGIP implementation sites of various higher education institutions (HEIs) in Kalinga from April 22 to 24, 2025. The visit showcased the commitment of both students and institutions to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.

At Saint Tonis College Inc. (STCI), the team observed the thriving growth of farm areas planted with bamboo and mango trees. At Kalinga College of Science and Technology (KCST), mango trees stood as testaments to sustained student efforts. Meanwhile, Kalinga State University – Rizal Campus proudly showcased more than 17,000 mulberry trees, many of which were planted and nurtured by student beneficiaries of the Free Higher Education (FHE), Tertiary Education Subsidy (TES), and Tulong Dunong Program (TDP).

Project SAGIP or Scholars and Grant-in-Aid Beneficiaries Action in Greening Initiative Program, an initiative conceived by former CHED-CAR Regional Director Dr. Demetrio P. Anduyan Jr., was officially launched on May 18, 2021, during CHED’s 27th Founding Anniversary. The project aims to promote environmental awareness and accountability by requiring student grantees under CHED and UniFAST to plant at least one fruit-bearing or indigenous tree each year during the course of their financial assistance.

This green initiative reflects CHED-UniFAST CAR’s commitment to embedding environmental consciousness into the fabric of higher education, encouraging students not only to grow academically—but also to grow trees, communities, and a more sustainable future.
